£28bn cost of autism revealed

Autism costs the UK Pfund27.7 billion every year, according to new research commissioned by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities.
The health and social care, lost employment and expenses for the UK's 433,000 adults and 107,000 children who have autism costs around Pfund4.7 million each over a lifetime, the research showed.
Caring for autistic adults costs Pfund25 billion a year, while supporting children with autism only costs Pfund2.7 billion annually.Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the foundation, said: "These figures illustrate the real cost of autism and give serious weight to the argument that more resources are needed to intervene early and effectively in the lives of those who are affected by the condition."
