THE needs of carers, and particularly those caring for family members with mental ill health, come under the spotlight on Friday with National Carers Rights Day. There are an estimated six million people in the UK with responsibility for caring for an elderly, disabled or ill person - 50,000 of whom live in Somerset. Although carers save the country's health and social care services as much as Pfund87 billion a year, organisations such as Carers UK say many carers still don't get the practical help or emotional support they need, leaving them struggling to cope and feeling isolated and socially excluded. Caring for an elderly or sick relative is a challenge for anyone, but even more complex problems arise when caring for someone with chronic mental ill health or a learning disability.
