Conservative Party leader David Cameron proposed a series of family-friendly policies, challenging Prime Minister Gordon Brown to call an election and bring a change to the political landscape of the U.K.
``Let the people pass judgment on 10 years of broken promises,'' Cameron said today at the opposition party's annual conference in Blackpool, England. ``Call that election.''
Cameron suggested the benefits system should encourage marriage and relationships and decline payments to people who refuse to take a job. He said his party would extend the right to flexible work hours for all families with children.
The speech spelling out the party's agenda may be the last before a general election. The Conservatives have trailed the Labour government in every poll except one since Gordon Brown replaced Tony Blair as prime minister in June. Labour Party lawmakers have urged Brown to exploit his lead by calling a vote now, 2 1/2 years before he needs to.
In a bid to narrow the gap with Labour, Cameron said Brown's agenda was ``cynical'' for putting forward promises he couldn't keep and ignoring the needs of doctors, police and the military. He repeated promises to curb tax on inheritance.
``It was a good speech, he didn't stumble, and he cheered the troops,'' said Anthony Wells, a polling analyst at YouGov Plc. ``But it's not the sort of speech that wows the country. They'll get a bounce. The question is how big it will be, and how long it will last.''
