Ambitious plans are afoot to improve care for the increasing number of people in Sutton living with dementia, including a brand new "one stop shop" care centre in Wallington. The new centre for excellence for dementia care - of which there are three in the UK - will mean patients will get specialist accommodation, day care, support services and leading edge technology designed to make normal living easier for residents. The new centre is expected to be ready by 2012, and may eventually replace current dementia care facilities. In the meantime the Franklin House service which now occupies the site in Shaw Way, will merge with Oakleigh Care Centre in Benhill Avenue, Sutton, freeing up the land for the new care centre. Oakleigh Care Centre has undergone improvements to make sure the service will cope and was reopened at the end of last month. Councillors are keen to allay fears about the relocation and changes to the services. Executive member for adult social services, Councillor Colin Stears, said: "We are committed to providing the best possible care for older people living with dementia in our community.
