More than 1,400 people have signed a petition protesting against the possible closure of a care facility in Polegate.
The Gilda Crescent Resource Centre is currently under review by social services chiefs at County Hall in Lewes. The county council's Cabinet next Tuesday will be considering a number of recommendations including moving the services at Gilda Crescent to Grangemead in Hailsham.Other options include the refurbishment and re-commissioning of Gilda Crescent as a long-term unit for older people with a learning disability. But Polegate's LibDems have reacted angrily and fear Gilda Crescent, together with the nearby William Daly Centre, will be shut.Town councillor Christine Berry, chairman of Polegate Liberal Democrats, said, "It is another stab in the back for Polegate."We fought for this before successfully but this time it is the town's people who are suffering again."The people in Gilda Crescent are all local people. It is a service we need here, especially with the loss of the Princess Alice and All Saints Hospital."Money is again being put before people. Most elderly people do not drive and have to rely on public transport.
