ISLINGTON Council's two social services supremos are facing calls for their resignations in the wake of a £3million "mismanagement" scandal. The opposition Labour party is calling for the scalp of Liberal Democrat councillor and executive member for social services, John Gilbert, while trade union Unison wants the director of adult services, Gwen Ovshinsky, to resign. It comes after the release of an Islington Council report detailing how the council came to hand over nearly £3million of tax-payers' money to service provider Care UK to help the corporation buy staff out of their contracts so they could be re-employed at a cheaper rate. Previous estimates had put the total cost at around £1million. In the report, its author, former council deputy chief executive Andy Jennings, singled out Councillor Gilbert. He said: "It is clear from my interviews with officers and members that, for whatever reason, members were not briefed as fully as I would have expected on a contract of this nature. "This is particularly the case for executive lead member for adult social services, Councillor Gilbert. In respect of executive and executive lead members, such briefings are provided regardless of whether they have been requested." Care UK took in over £1billion pounds in revenue last year.
