THE parents of a 12-year-old boy who knew he was being abused by a paedophile did not try to stop it.
The couple saw Adrian Hale groping the youngster, but continued to allow the boy to visit the pervert.
And when they spoke to the 59-year-old, who was jailed for three years in May for the systematic abuse, about what had taken place he told them that the boy had enjoyed it.
But a judge at Swindon Crown Court said the couple, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were otherwise good parents' and were not worldly wise'.
Hale started to invite the boy to his Haydon Wick house in the late summer of 2005, when the abuse would take place.
As well as putting his hands down the trousers of the youngster to touch his genitals Hale also carried out depraved acts on him. The pervert bought mobile phone top-ups as well as a number of gifts of clothing, shoes, sweets and chocolates for the boy.
Richard Thomas, prosecuting, told the court that the boy's mum, 55, and dad, 46, had seen some of the abuse taking place.
At an earlier hearing the couple admitted child cruelty. Rob Ross, defending, handed a letter to the court which had been written by the abused boy and spoke of his love for his parents. He also said a social services report told how well they had reacted to what went on. He said the child was still in care though one of the couple's children was living with them.
Passing sentence, Recorder Nigel Seed QC said: "You have pleaded guilty each to a very serious charge of cruelty to a child.
